As a student of DAcCHM, I am continually inspired by the depth and elegance of Traditional Chinese Medicine. What speaks to me most is the philosophy of harmonizing, balancing, and living in alignment with the natural rhythms of life. TCM invites us to see the body not as a machine with isolated parts, but as a living, breathing ecosystem shaped by emotion, environment, and energy.
Among the most captivating elements of this system are the meridians—the subtle pathways where Qi flows to nourish, regulate, and enliven the entire body. These channels offer insight into how vitality moves, how emotions imprint on the body, and how healing emerges when balance is restored.
Practices like acupuncture, acupressure, QiGong—and even certain energetic traditions outside TCM—support this flow by clearing stagnation, strengthening deficiencies, and returning us to inner alignment.
Meridians: The Pathways of Life
In The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine (Huangdi Neijing), the meridians are described as channels that “nourish the organs and safeguard life”. They are conduits for Qi and Blood, connecting the organs, tissues, emotions, and senses.
Why Meridians Matter
Meridians:
• guide the movement of Qi
• harmonize organ function
• support emotional stability
• reflect lifestyle and environmental influences
• link humans to seasons and cosmic rhythms
They remind us that health is not static—it is the ongoing expression of balanced movement.
Clearing Blockages: Acupuncture, Acupressure, and QiGong
Acupuncture
The Neijing explains that acupuncture “opens what is blocked and closes what is leaking”, restoring proper flow through precise points and regulated stimulation.
Acupressure
A more accessible method, acupressure uses touch to stimulate the same meridians, supporting daily balance and self-care.
QiGong
QiGong unites breath, movement, and intention, cultivating and circulating Qi from within. It teaches the body how to return to its natural state of coherence and presence.

Energy Traditions in Dialogue: Reiki, Meridians, Chakras & the Aura
In addition to my TCM studies, I’ve deepened my understanding of energy through Reiki and other energetic healing practices. What fascinates me is how these diverse systems, though emerging from different cultural and historical contexts, often describe the same energetic realities, simply through different languages.
As a Reiki practitioner, I experience the flow of energy through the chakras and aura, sensing where it gathers, disperses, or becomes stagnant. This practice has revealed to me striking parallels with TCM’s understanding of Qi moving through the meridians; pooling, obstructing, and harmonizing in response to the body’s needs.
When I bring awareness of meridian pathways into Reiki sessions, it often feels as if the chakras, aura, and meridians are different expressions of the same subtle architecture. Each system offers unique insight, yet all converge on one truth: life-force energy must flow freely for true healing to occur.
This understanding resonates deeply with the wisdom in The Web That Has No Weaver, which reminds us that “the body is a system of meaning, not just mechanics.” Energy medicine; whether through TCM, Reiki, or meditative practices, invites us to approach healing as a multidimensional, integrative process.
Three Foundational Works
- The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine
This foundational medical text teaches that health arises from living “in harmony with the laws of nature”. It describes the body as a dynamic field of Yin and Yang, shaped by emotions, lifestyle, climate, and intention.

- The Web That Has No Weaver (Ted Kaptchuk)
Kaptchuk offers a clear understanding of Chinese medical thought, exploring how patterns—not isolated symptoms—reveal the root of imbalance.

- Between Heaven and Earth (Beinfield & Korngold)
This book presents humans as existing “between Heaven and Earth, shaped by both”. It explores the Five Elements and how each influences our behavior, emotions, and energetic tendencies. It’s a reminder that imbalance is simply communication, not failure.

Meridian Balance as a Path to Clarity, Health & Inner Alignment
When meridians flow freely:
• energy feels abundant
• emotions move and release
• digestion and sleep harmonize
• the spirit feels grounded and clear
When Qi stagnates or scatters, discomfort emerges—physically, mentally, and emotionally. TCM practices gently restore the natural flow, supporting the body’s innate wisdom to heal itself.
Living in Harmony
As a DAcCHM student, the more I study, the more I realize that TCM is not only a medical system—it is a way of living with awareness. It teaches us to listen deeply, harmonize with nature, respond to change, and trust in the subtle intelligence within the body.
The meridians are part of that wisdom: a timeless map guiding us toward balance, connection, and vitality.
When we honor this flow—whether through acupuncture, QiGong, meditation, or Reiki—we return to what is natural, effortless, and whole.
